Sunday School - Our Journey

Sunday Mornings are set-aside for OUR JOURNEY, Bible study time for college students and young adults to dig deeper into God’s Word and build relationships in a more personal setting. We are striving to be a redemptive, transformative community living as a blessing of God in all the world. Young adults are invited into the Body of Christ and into a community that lives out the moral imperatives of Scripture. Our Journey takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM.

Becoming A Good Samaritan!

A World in crisis... besieged by Poverty, Pandemic Diseases, Social Injustice, Racism, Inequality and Political Oppression…

What impact could 77 million American Christians have on these problems? How different would our world be if the Church of Jesus Christ became the strongest voice on these issues? Why don’t more Christians get personally involved?

It could be that we’ve become paralyzed by the enormity of the problem. Or worse, maybe we’ve become so caught up in our own busy, busy lives that our brain shuts out everything not on our “to do” list – including the Good Samaritan opportunities right in front of us!

Whatever the reason, when we’re faced with the reality of committing ourselves to being the hands and feet of Christ to a hurting world, we get stopped at the most critical point on the journey… the beginning!

In six dynamic sessions, the start> Becoming A Good Samaritan DVD curriculum explores the critical needs facing our world and helps Christians understand how they can become Good Samaritans, right now, right where they live.

Hosted by John Ortberg, this curriculum features an amazing line up of teachers, thinkers and leaders including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Eugene Peterson, Kay Warren, Rob Bell, Jim Cymbala, Gary Haugen, Jim Wallis, Mathew Sleeth, Philip Yancey, Rich Stearns, Shane Claiborne, Star Parker, Steve Chalke, Joni Eareckson Tada, Chuck Colson, Zach Hunter, Denver Moore, Ron Hall, and many others.

DISC GOLF

Meet at the Church THIS Friday, July 24 at 2:00pm. We are going to be playing disc golf at Seven Oaks. We have extra discs so come and play even if you don’t have one. This is a great chance for first timers to learn how to play as well as a great challenge for veteran disc golfers. This is a FREE event!

WHITEWATER RAFTING

We shortened the time and reduced the cost so that more of you could make this trip. We are leaving from the Church Friday, Aug. 14 at 2:00pm. We will be staying at a camp near the Ocoee (bring sleeping bag etc.). We are planning on going whitewater rafting Saturday on the Ocoee River. The cost is $95 / person and we will also be stopping for supper on the way down and a LATE lunch on the way back (so plan on bringing hearty snacks!). Space is limited so be sure to sign up with Pastor Shane (cash on the barrel!)

HCN’S ANNUAL PRAYER PATH

This week you are invited to "journey" through the labyrinth guided by a CD narration set against a worshipful music backdrop. Eleven stations on your journey will lead you to "let go" of busyness, hurt and distractions that can spoil relationships, "center" your life on God and spend time with him, and reach out to the world with Christ's love.

Student Ministries sponsors the annual Prayer Path again this year during Holy Week, April 7-11, 2009. The Prayer Path provides an opportunity to open your eyes…open your ears…open your heart…and encounter God in this multimedia labyrinth experience. Sign up in The Center Foyer or call the church office at 847-3335 to reserve a time slot.

I highly encourage each of you to take part in this creative experience that will add depth and fresh insight into your Easter celebration.

The focus for the weekend is “Silence & Listening for the Voice of God”. The cost is $60 (includes 2 nights, 7 meals & transportation). Registration has already begun and spaces are filling quickly. URGENT: Room in the Inn
The College & Young Adult group will be hosting the men from the Room in the Inn ministry THIS SATURDAY NIGHT. Please let me know if you can bring food (breakfast Sunday morning), join us for supper or spend the night.

A Note from Justin
This week I received the following letter that Justin Smith who has left for Marine basic training. He wrote specifically to our college & young adult ministry the following message:

“Sunday school class,

Hello from Parris Island, it is New Year’s Day, and I have 9 weeks until I graduate. I’m sure it’s still cold in Nashville, but here it seems like it’s “spin of a dial” that decides. Yesterday, it was about 70-75’, we woke up this morning and it was 40’. We typically have 2-3 days cold, 2-3 days hot and then it starts all over, which has kept most the platoon sick: small stuff, colds and such.

Enjoy the sermon and class this Sunday for me. Here all denominations are clumped together as “Protestants” and they seem to talk more about the military than God. (Okay, got my whining out of the way.) I will say the Christmas service was good; I was starting to worry Baby Jesus was going to be a Marine! (Sarcasm) I can’t wait to get back and see everyone and eat whatever Robin and Ken make for Sunday school.

Time moves quickly and until Christmas week, I couldn’t even keep track of what day it was. We have five drill instructors four our platoon; most others only have four. You can imagine the fun to be had here. I have had to push my body further than I thought I could. I am constantly amazed that I can do as much as I can. Before coming here, I never would have pushed myself like I do now. I miss you all and look forward to coming home. Just don’t make fun of my haircut!

New Sunday school series
Sunday school takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM. This week we start a new series investigating Paul’s letter to the Church in Philippi.

Course description: Paul was writing from prison as he faced the real possibility of execution. Whatever the circumstances, Paul had learned to be content, finding real joy as he focused all of his attention and energy on knowing Christ and obeying him. How great an opportunity we have, to study this short, but powerful letter of how we should live in Christ.

Happy Holidays! I hope you are enjoying the advent season.

Here are a few things to be aware of:

Regular Sunday morning schedule
We will be having Sunday school as usual in room 226 at 9:00am. Breakfast will be served! 10:15 service will be in the Center. If service is canceled due to weather, it will be announced on the website and I will send out an announcement via facebook.

Selected Christmas Concert with soup & salad
This Sunday evening, at 6:00pm, three talented vocalists in our congregation will be sharing Christmas songs with us. Look forward to the musical gifts of Dorinda Biggs, Suzanne Herring, and Catherine Segars. Immediately following we will have a Soup and Salad Fellowship.

Room in the Inn
The College & Young Adult group will be hosting the men from the Room in the Inn ministry on January 10. Please let me know if you can bring food, join us for supper or spend the night.

Christmas Eve Service
There will be a Christmas Eve Service this year at HCN, Wednesday, December 24, at 7:00 PM in The Sanctuary.

Combined Service
December 28, there will be one combined service with families worshipping together. The service will be at 10:00 AM in The Center. There will be no Sunday School and no Evening Services.

Here’s what we have coming up…

Christmas Concert this Sunday, but no Sunday school
Special service this Sunday, December 7. The Hermitage Church band and choir will present a morning of special music in The Center at 9AM and 10:30AM. There will be no Sunday School.

At 6:00PM the children’s ministry will be presenting their musical/drama, “Angel Alert!” Following the children’s presentation there will be a fellowship time with Finger Foods.

College & Young Adult Christmas party
Join us for a night of fun and festivities at the HCN College & Young Adult Christmas party next Saturday. Finger food & goodies will be provided (if you would like to bring something, please let me know).
When: Saturday, 7:00PM, Dec. 13
Where: the Hunt’s (5544 W. Shady Trail, Old Hickory, TN, 37138)
What to Bring: We will be doing a “dirty Santa” gift exchange so please bring a wrapped gift (approximate value: $5 to $10).

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope your day is filled with family, friends, and lots of food.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind…

Sunday school
Sunday school takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM. This week we start our Advent season. We will look at the promise of a Savior in the midst of terrible times and our response to his coming.

Hiking Saturday
The plan is to leave the Church at 9:30am, Saturday (Nov. 29) and heading to the Old Trace - Garrison Creek Loop Trail. Although it is only a one day hike, it is rated as “moderate”, one attempting it should be ready for an adventurous hike. For those who feel up to the 6+ mile challenge, the trip promises to be a memorable and worthwhile experience.

Here are the stats on the Hike:
Length: 6.3 total miles
Trail Type: Loop
Skill Level: Moderate
Duration: 3.5 hours
Season: Year-round

If you are planning on going:
1. Let me know: email / facebook, call, or talk to me in person.
2. Dress appropriately: comfortable shoes are a must. Be sure to layer clothing to avoid overheating and/or freezing. The weather looks good, but the latest forecast does give us a 30% chance of rain.
3. Pack a HEARTY LUNCH, several snacks (trail mix, granola bars, etc.) and plenty of WATER (at least a liter).
4. Money for a meal on the road.

Hang-on, Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Here’s a couple of updates to help you stay connected…

Sunday school
Hope to see you tomorrow morning as we dig deeper into God’s Word. Sunday school takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM. We will look at what Hebrews says about faith and its role in a world of unseen realities.

Long Story Short
The much anticipated encore performance of Long Story Short starring Diane and Jeff Cater, Stephan Scappaticci, and Shelley Flint is scheduled for this Sunday night (November 23). Join us for a hilarious dramatic reenactment of the entire bible in just 60 minutes. It’s a great way to introduce people to the gospel story in a comfortable, non-threatening atmosphere.

Operation Christmas Child

This Sunday, following the morning service, we will take part in Operation Christmas Child.

“Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. People of all ages can be involved in this simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ.” (http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/)

After the morning service, (1) we will have lunch together in room 226 (where we have Sunday school), (2) head to Big Lots! to purchase items for our shoe boxes, (3) return to HCN to pack up & wrap our boxes, and (4) pray over them.

If you plan to attend this event please RSVP (let us know) BEFORE Sunday so that we can have enough food for everyone. You can do this by e-mail or RSVP to the facebook event.

If you would like to be a part of Operation Christmas Child but cannot be there on Sunday, you can drop off a completed box BY SUNDAY NIGHT (Nov. 9).

How to Pack a Shoe Box
1. Shoe Box -- Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Boy or Girl? Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Labels will be provided.
3. FILL WITH GIFTS -- Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided on the bottom of this page.
4. INCLUDE YOUR DONATION -- Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs.
5. DROP OFF -- Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and leave it at the Church.

three quick reminders:

First, next week is our Operation Christmas Child Blitz. We are asking everyone in the college & young adult ministry to come prepared to help with this exciting and worthwhile ministry. The plan is to stay for lunch (we’ll provide it), go shopping together (Big Lots!) to get items for a needy child’s Christmas package. We will then pack the boxes and pray over them.

Second, we are no longer using the Church van to provide rides to & from Trevecca on Sunday mornings. Given the price of gasoline and the low number of students utilizing this service (compared to the solid number of students driving themselves), we have decided to suspend the van rides. IF YOU STILL NEED A RIDE, please do not hesitate to call me or contact one of the other TNU students driving to Hermitage.

Third, we have an excellent Sunday school discussion planned for tomorrow morning (9:00AM in room 226) and would love for you to be a part of the experience. Here’s a taste of what’s in store for class in the morning: “We always think we know what’s missing from our lives in order to really make us happy, don’t we? ‘If only I had that car, or that job, or if only I could lose those 15 lbs, then I’d be happy.’ Really? How often do we want something only to find out that it wasn’t that great after all? Sometimes we ask God for things and if he doesn’t deliver right away, we start questioning whether God really understands or even cares. Do we really trust God? Do we trust that God is good and sees a bigger picture than we ever could? It’s easy to want what’s right in front of us, but maybe God knows what’s better for us, and sometimes we just can’t see it. Here's what you need to know:

See you in the Morning
Sunday school Sunday Morning is the primary time for our College ministry as we seek to dig deeper into God’s Word and build relationships in a more personal setting. Sunday school takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM. This week we explore what it means to “love the World”. As always breakfast will be served.

Fish Fry
The annual Fall Fish Fry is scheduled for this evening at 5:00 PM. The church provides the fish, French fries, slaw, hush puppies, paper products and condiments. Families are asked to bring a large drink and a favorite dessert. Wear outside clothes. Bring lawn chairs or sitting spreads.

Operation Christmas Child
Join with Samaritan’s Purse and provide Christmas gifts for a child in a third world country. On Sunday, November 9 we do a one-day-all-included-blitz and will go shopping together in an effort to compile Christmas packages, pack them up at the Church, pray over them and then send them out. Cost: approx. $12 - $15 per box.

NEW Small Groups Needed
We continue to look for new opportunities to start new small groups on our various campuses and around middle Tennessee. If you are interested in leading or being involved in a small group, please contact Ken.

CANDY PARADE
All Hermitage Church children from infancy through grade 4 are invited to a Candy Parade in The Center on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at 6:30 PM. Adults are invited to bring candy for 200 children to greet and distribute treats.

ALL CHURCH THANKSGIVING DINNER
The Hermitage Church family celebrates a Thanksgiving meal together on Sunday, November 16, 2008, at 5:00 PM in The Center. Volunteers are needed to cook a ham or turkey. Call the church office at 847-3335 to volunteer. Everyone else will need to bring a vegetable, salad, dessert and drink.

I am writing this email from high in the hills of Gatlinburg.

Our college & young adult ministry has a camping trip scheduled for this weekend; however the feedback that I’ve gotten is that three days is too much time away from the studies and work. Therefore, we are planning a one day hiking trip not too far from Nashville.

The NEW plan is leaving TNU at 9am or the Church at 9:30am and heading to the John C. Clayborn Millennium Trail. Be warned: the Millennium is an eight mile hike and rated as “difficult”. Although it is only a one day hike, one attempting it should be ready for an arduous hike. That being said, for those who feel up to the challenge, the trip promises to be a memorable and worthwhile experience.

If you are planning on going:
1. Let me know: email / facebook, or talk to me in person on Sunday. I am currently in the mountains and cellphone reception is spotty.
2. Dress appropriately: comfortable shoes are a must. Light jacket if it looks like rain would be smart.

October 1, 2008 – 10:00amNeely Hall, Belmont UniversityWorld renowned Christian author, speaker, and leader Shane Claiborne will be speaking in the Collins Alumni Auditorium, on the campus of Belmont University. Shane will be speaking on his latest book, Jesus for President. The time may be difficult for some of you, but hearing Shane’s message is well worth the effort!

Celebration of Cultures
October 4, 2008Centennial Park, NashvilleCelebration of Cultures exists to celebrate and embrace cultural diversity through respecting, understanding, and appreciating the cultures of the Greater Nashville population. The festival has reached out to over 30 cultures through dance, music, visual arts, a children’s area, and exotic food samplings. Cost: just the price of food!

Hope you’re having a good week and getting plenty of sleep. Here’s an update of what’s happening:

Fall Concert
This Sunday September 28, the Hermitage Choir and Center Band will be performing the Fall Concert, 2008, at 9:00AM and 10:30AM in The Center. The music features big, new Brooklyn Tabernacle selections. No Sunday School Classes meet for this one Sunday.

POVERTY SUPPER
You are invited to a Poverty Supper at HCN this Sunday, September 28, 2008, from 5:00 to 6:30PM in The Center. The menu is basic: beans, potatoes, bread, and drink. The cost is a donation. The goal is to raise $8,400 ($70 per month x 12 months x 10 orphans), to provide food, clothing, housing, and schooling for ten Kenyan orphans. The first building of this orphanage was constructed by the HCN Mission Africa team last June. A silent auction of art will be available in the lobby of The Center, coordinated by Angela Hisey, Sandra Hunt, and Holly Steinmetz. Please plan to attend. Would you consider sponsoring one of the orphans?

World renowned Christian author, speaker, and leader Shane Claiborne will be speaking in the Collins Alumni Auditorium, on the campus of Lipscomb University. Shane will be speaking on his latest book, Jesus for President.

Sunday Mornings are set-aside for OUR JOURNEY, Bible study time for college students and young adults to dig deeper into God’s Word and build relationships in a more personal setting. Our Journey takes place in room 226 at 9:00AM. We continue the series Great Themes in Romans. This week the lesson is entitled, Freedom from Sin.

Instructive Moments with the Savior
Sunday, 6:00pm, room 226.This unique series draws readers back in time to the streets of Jerusalem and the hills of Palestine to the revealing words of a wandering Jewish preacher. This series weaves events, emotions, thoughts, and faces into a moving depiction of the life of Christ. Woven with threads of humanity and divinity, Moments with the Savior reveals the Lord who calls you to a more intimate relationship with him.

Small Groups — Merge
Through our small groups, or MERGE groups, you will engage in a journey through biblically provocative, open-ended conversations. Each discussion will take you deep into your story and help you discover the spiritual and often paradoxical truths of Christianity.
